My Granny Holt made a caramel iced yellow cake all my life. It was WONDERFUL! We have all missed it. Last week I bought a homemade caramel cake from a restaurant in town because it looked JUST LIKE Granny's and I wondered if it tasted like it too. It did, or pretty close. So this week I looked a recipes and tried a couple in effort to reproduce hers. My Granny was on a limited budget and all her "favorites" were always cost efficient. In my looking through recipes I simply could not find the "right" one. So I called my Aunt Kathleen. Kathleen is an EXCELLENT cook and she (being really smart) watched carefully as Granny made the cake. She lovingly and sweetly gave the THE recipe. Oh what JOY!! My cake is nowhere near as pretty as Granny's were, but I hope to have plenty of time to practice. This is the wonderful cake, or perhaps I should say the "cake of my labor":

And THE recipe? So my kids don't have to wonder someday?
Granny Holt's Caramel Cake1 1/2 sticks of butter
1 1/2 cups of packed DARK brown sugar
5 T of milk
4 1/2- 5 cups of powdered sugar
One box of Duncan Hines BUTTER yellow cake mix
Prepare cake as directed and cool.
Cook over medium heat: butter, sugar and milk until it is melted (but NOT boiling!) Just until the mixture doesn't taste grainy.
Take off heat and beat(use a mixer...lol) in the powdered sugar. You do not want it too thick as it sets up quickly! Spread and ENJOY!!!
