Criticals? Today I was talking to Zack's counselor by phone. In a meeting last week (that Scott attended) it was suggested, by some, that Zack was doing really well. Others maintained his need for further help. So his counselor sat down and documented all his behaviors(quite lengthy) in a behavioral report. While Zack has not had a critical since last October he has threatened physical harm to staff members 3 times. Scott's words (mirroring my thoughts) were, "And that is not considered a critical?". Nope, not until he actually DOES follow through.
We (Scott and I) are much more conservative on the safety side. If you use your words to imply a danger? We will take you at your word. I think of that song my children sang when they were small, be careful little mouth WHAT YOU SAY. It is so true!! No matter how big your mouth is!!
It has been suggested that Zack remain in RTC until March, while they are still looking for alternative placement. To Scott and I that is good news...it means he will continue to have the opportunity to learn skills he must have to be successful!
When my son was threatening to kill us (about a month ago) in our sleep, his psychiatrist was most concerned about how things were going at school. I was shocked, angry and saddened that he did not take these threats seriously. So, if he follows thru on his threat, then (and only then) we need to take it seriously? If he follows thru, then he can say, "well, I warned them". After my son realized that he had no consequences for talking to us like that (and really, aside from taking even more precautions around him, what could we do?) he started threatening his teachers and aides at school. Don't tell him NO because he's going to make you sorry. I've really got to get a better life.
ReplyDeleteJust today my brother and I were talking about my sister (who is in a mental hospital after being in prison for the last 10 years). Said sister is on serious medication and she still hears voices. She has since she was a teenager. Not at all funny, but you reminded me of one time she woke our sister Jennifer. Chris was standing over her with scissors and told Jen that the voices told her she needed to kill her. I laugh (at the awfulness that anyone would have to be in a conversation like this) thinking about Jennifers' reply, "Well they told you wrong!" Crazy is easy to understand and so very dangerous to live with!!!
